The Executive Office of the Open Society Foundations is led by the President, the Vice President and the Chief Integration Officer and it convenes OSF’s governance processes and sets overarching strategy.  The Chief Integration Officer aims to integrate and align systems, practices and policies across the OSF network, to make the most of its unique range and scale. They seek to map, understand and seize opportunities and to mitigate dysfunction, creating conditions for better collaboration and thereby maximizing efficiency.  A key aspect of their work is to build and promote an organizational culture that is inclusive and equitable and cherishes diversity and difference, ensuring staff feel fully seen and valued.  The role of Special Advisor, Culture and Inclusion is inward-facing and focused primarily on OSF’s commitment to advance an inclusive organizational culture in its many forms.


General description


The Special Advisor on Culture and Inclusion will have strong capacity and experience in the fields of organizational culture, diversity, equity and inclusion, and will report to, and work closely with the Chief Integration Officer to design and implement a program of work to improve organizational culture and inclusion at OSF.  They will deputize for the Chief Integration Officer where necessary and both collaborate and coordinate with the Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) team of the Human Resources Department, among other internal partners.  While the focus of this role will be on areas related to inclusion, the successful candidate must also be willing to support the Chief Integration Officer on other aspects of integration at OSF. 


Role’s purpose/function

  • To contribute expertise and experience in implementation of programs to strengthen OSF’s organizational culture, diversity, equity and inclusion;
  • To provide advice and support to the Chief Integration Officer in designing and implementing strategies to strengthen organizational culture and ensure inclusion;
  • To represent or deputize for the Chief Integration Officer in projects or commitments relating to organizational culture and inclusion
  • To provide leaders and staff with support and advice on D&I projects in their teams



  • With Chief Integration Officer, develop strategy to advance OSF internal agenda on inclusion and build support among key internal partners; 
  • Contribute to developing, planning and implementing annual workplan of the Integration team;
  • Work with HR to develop tools and practices to survey or capture staff views on aspects of workplace culture and inclusion;
  • Act as secretariat for meetings and functions of the Leadership Group on Inclusion, liaising closely with the D&I team in HR,  keeping records of and tracking decisions and their implementation;
  • Advance high priority projects of the Integration Office and the Leadership Group on Inclusion, including liaising, advising and supporting OSF programs and foundations that want to advance discrete projects on inclusion;
  • Work with other entities such as the Operations Management Group and the Office of the General Counsel to advance  inclusion and support coordination and collaboration;
  • Support the Chief Integration Officer with measurement and reporting of progress against agreed indicators and goals;
  • Represent the Chief Integration Officer as necessary in engagement with other foundations, NGOs or other actors;
  • Conduct research and write briefing papers for the Chief Integration Officer or other members of the executive office;
  • Work with Communications Team to provide regular updates on progress in D&I and organizational culture.


Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience roles that helped shape and strengthen organizational culture and/or advance diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, ideally in non-profit or philanthropy sectors;
  • Demonstrable awareness, knowledge and insight into  the challenges of advancing inclusion in the context of organizational development and governance is required;
  • Experience leading complex initiatives and managing key elements of global projects;
  • Intuitive approach, empathy and curiosity about others, self-awareness and emotional intelligence;
  • Commitment to, and passion for creating an inclusive environment and ability to generate innovative solutions;
  • Willingness to travel internationally on a frequent basis.
