In 1992, Eli Lilly and Company established the Delivery, Device, and Connected Solutions (DDCS) business for the purpose of creating, developing, launching and continuously improving proprietary delivery device systems. This business is unique to the broader Lilly Research Labs organization due to its focus on patient centered delivery system solutions, its innovative approach to delivery platforms utilizing both internal and external technologies, and its level of integration with the commercial groups and Business Units. This business enables almost $4.0 billion in pharmaceutical sales and is projected to double in the next 6 years.

We are seeking a creative hands-on mechanical engineer to join some of the best and brightest engineers and scientists in DDCS to help in developing drug delivery devices; to dream, innovate and bring life-saving technologies and medicines to market.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will work to find creative solutions in areas that include mechanical and electromechanical systems. You will explore, design and prototype drug delivery devices and test systems. You will engage in all stages of product development, including defining user needs, development product specifications, building and testing prototypes and collaborating with others at Lilly to ensure designs are robust, low-cost, and manufacturable.

The ideal individual will have an extremely strong mechanical engineering skill set and will be able to take initiative and work independently. As important, s/he will be an effective collaborator with many different constituents:
Responsible for Design Control, Validation and Verification activities in compliance with the device quality system regulation:
  • Drawing and part specification development and review
  • Writing technical reports, work instructions, change control documentation and development plans
  • Develop and manage project risk plans specific to design and process
  • Management of third party relationship and drive key technical deliverables
  • Ensure that the work activities are conducted in accordance with applicable medical device regulations. Follow good quality system practices and ensure documentation is developed that supports decisions and changes
Experience in Product Development, Commercialization and Product Launch:
  • Experience in product development including early stage product selection, an understanding of customer needs, and knowledge of industry trends, through maintaining contacts in device community
  • Exposure and general familiarity with validation and scale-up issues
  • Evaluation of finite element analysis, tolerance stacks, mold flows, DOE, ultrasonic welding parameters, gluing
Project Management Expertise:
  • This position requires a level of expertise in general project management skills, and a familiarity with the major steps required in technical product development, especially in a regulated environment
  • The individual must be able to lead multi-functional / multi-site project teams consisting of members of production, planning, quality control, and marketing, as well as external design and manufacturing resources
  • The individual will conduct meetings and prepare design-specific project presentations and reports, in addition to publishing basic schedules and participating in project problem-solving
The ability to influence and work collaboratively:
  • Engage with Contract Developers and Manufacturers to efficiently drive collaboration on development projects.
  • Partner with manufacturing and quality to ensure robust design, testing and Design Control deliverables.
  • Engage with leaders and project managers to ensure robust project execution.
  • Partner with Business Unit representatives (primarily Medical and Marketing) on Patient Centered Design
Potential to lead a team consisting of approximately 2-5 direct reports of diverse education/training backgrounds.
  • PhD in Engineering or MS in Engineering with 7+ years of experience or BS in Engineering with 10+ years of experience. (Mechanical, Biomedical or Electrical Engineering preferred)
  • Previous experience in designing and developing medical devices or consumer products
  • Previous experience working with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD packages
  • Previous experience with prototype
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-functional teams, work effectively across boundaries, and to effectively influence without authority
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work productively in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to identify problems and drive issue resolution/improvements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to effectively interact at all levels of the organization - business leaders, senior technical/scientific personnel, internal/external customers/suppliers/teammates
  • Demonstrated analytical skills including statistics, DOE, experimental design or Six Sigma.
  • Understand IP, freedom to operate and competitive landscape in targeted areas of research.
  • Location is at Lilly Technology Center – North, Indianapolis, IN
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time both domestic and international
