Role Summary:As a Research Engineer - Structural Mechanics/Dynamics in the Mechanics and Design Organization, you will perform research, design, and development in structural optimization, structural dynamics, and/or related areas to develop and implement innovative mechanical design solutions for a wide variety of applications across the GE businesses.

Essential Responsibilities:

You will:







+ Collaborate with engineers at Global Research and the GE business units in the conceptual design, analysis and validation of new mechanical components and systems with a wide variety of material compositions (e.g., metals, composites, additive or other complex multi-material structures).



+ Define analysis requirements and develop and execute numerical methods and models using proprietary and commercial FEA solvers, analysis systems and databases to predict the transient response of components under complex loading.



+ Participate in the definition and execution of validation tests to improve accuracy of the resulting mechanical and thermal prediction tools and rigorously compare design predictions to experimental data when validating newly developed methodologies.



+ Participate in technology roadmapping and competitive assessment to drive new technology programs in computational or experimental methods in the design and lifing of machinery and equipment.



+ Provide technical guidance and direction across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge in technical focus areas.



+ Serve as a technical resource to resolve key, short term high risk technical issues in technical focus areas.



+ Deliver effective presentations, reports and publications to engineering staff, GE businesses and external agencies.

















Qualifications/Requirements:







+ Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline with a strong background in structural design and analysis, or a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines with at least 3 years of experience in structural design and analysis in an industrial environment.



+ Strong technical skills in solid mechanics, composite mechanics and finite element methods with commercial packages such as ANSYS (including advanced meshing tools and non-linear analysis) and/or LS-Dyna.



+ Clear evidence of passion, innovation and creativity.



+ Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; execution mindset and sense of urgency.



+ Strong verbal and written communication skills, teamwork skills and ability to form and work in cross-functional and cross-organizational teams.



+ Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.



+ Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.



+ Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics:





+ Demonstrated experience with implicit and explicit commercial FE codes.



+ Experienced with structural optimization and commercial codes such as Optistruct or Ansys.



+ Experience with impact and progressive damage simulations.



+ Experience in fabrication and testing of composite structures.



+ Experience with design and optimization for additive manufacturing.



+ Demonstrated project leadership experience including successful track record of completing deliverables.



+ Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections in turbomachinery, electrical machines, or large-scale mechanical or electrical systems



+ Experience with parametric, feature-based geometric modeling, hands-on experience with commercial and CAD packages (UniGraphics, Pro-Engineer, etc.)



+ Strong analytical skills.
