Job Description

As one of a team of specialist shipping business journalists, this position will be responsible for generating Lloyd’s List’s market leading news and analysis content. The role requires someone who can break daily news that sets the industry agenda while giving timely, insightful context to market events that puts our subscribers ahead of the competition.

The aim is simple – make Lloyd’s List an indispensable part of our subscribers’ daily routine.

The reporter will be responsible for writing content for the Lloyd’s List Daily Briefing – a comprehensive view of the industry delivered to our subscribers at the start of their day, as well as contributing to weekly, monthly and quarterly insight content. The role requires someone who can distil complex issues into essential news bulletins that understand our subscribers’ business demands.

The reporter should ideally have a solid grounding in shipping industry dynamics, but more important is a proven record of breaking news and developing analysis pieces and maintaining sources at all levels. They should thrive within a team environment and excel under stringent deadlines.

The role requires someone who has a proven interest in online and data journalism, and be passionate about conveying information through various mediums, including infographics.

The role is Hong Kong-based with a requirement to cover Asian news and events, but the output will be global in focus and the reporter will work collaboratively with an international team of journalists, analysts and editors. Financial reporting knowledge will be useful as the role requires writing about companies’ earnings as well as market fundamentals. Knowledge of Korean and/or Japanese is also desirable as the role involves communicating with parties in north east Asia from those countries on a regular basis.


  • Write accurate, insightful breaking news responding to market events, adding market context that clearly flags up business opportunities and threats to our subscribers.
  • Write at least three original stories a week, based on various approaches, including data and visual journalism.
  • Write and edits content for the Daily Briefing e-mail and pdf/online daily editions.
  • Contributes content to weekly, monthly and regular special report outputs as necessary.
  • Maintains key company intelligence and data producing regular financial and strategic reports into company and sector developments.
  • Establishes, maintains and nurtures key sources and maintains a source list that can be shared and leveraged across the organization.
  • Develops diverse information sources (including documents; third tier sources etc) and a strong ability to interpret information from various documents.

  • Displays well-rounded communication skills: good listening techniques, a clear, concise writing style and good verbal skills. Has the ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities internally and externally. Ability to provide a detailed and accurate review of peers work showing good judgment and to express, both positive and negative comments.
  • Works well in a team environment, focusing on collaboration and adapting to the needs and deadlines issued by multiple editors.
  • Has good research and analytical capabilities to locate and interpret a variety of information, and is comfortable mining and analysing data.
  • Displays a curiosity in the subject, seeking to learn about new issues that impact beat area and constantly seeking to find answers to questions.
  • A track record of working successfully as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic and ability to take ownership of his/her work
  • A detail-oriented, inquisitive individual who works constantly to improve their skills
  • Possesses basic computer and keyboarding skills including Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Multilingual capabilities a significant plus.


Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Minimum two years of journalism experience
  • Experience in shipping/business reporting preferred
  • Strong writing skills, with emphasis on accuracy and speed
  • Knowledge of Korean and/or Japanese desirable
  • Ability to work under pressure
