Ovum has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Analyst to join the Payments practice, part of the Financial Services team within TMT Intelligence, the division of Informa Business Information focused on Telecoms, Media and Technology. Ovum’s Payments practice provides business-critical advice and intelligence on all aspects of IT within the FS industry, with core topics including open banking strategy, real-time payments, fraud/financial crime, core platform upgrade/replacement, customer experience and wider enterprise digital transformation. For our vendor clients we identify opportunities in the market, enable them to counter competitors and anticipate customer requirements.


The successful candidate will play a key role in sustaining and expanding Ovum’s expert retail payments coverage. This role is key for the delivery of our analysis in syndicated (regularly published reports) and custom form. The position is suited to a self-motivated and confident individual who is able to express considered and bold opinions through thought-provoking research and analysis to a mixed audience of technical end users through senior industry executives. The ability to effectively work as part of a global team is essential.


As a Principal Analyst you will:


  • Take the lead in producing thought leading research on the payments sector, with an emphasis on the opportunities and imperatives for enterprises around open banking, real-time payments and the impact on the future industry value chain.
  • Drive the quality and depth of our research and data by collaborating within our analyst team to produce unique and high-impact insights to our clients.
  • Be proactive in deepening our existing client relationships, and working with our commercial teams to develop new opportunities.
  • Increase the visibility and influence of Ovum’s Financial Services team in the industry and vendor communities
  • Position oneself as a thought leader in the sector through the production of authoritative, opinionated, and original analysis
  • Conduct telephone and face-to-face interviews with industry sources, both agencies and vendors, and other forms of primary research, with a low reliance on publicly-available sources
  • Use and analyze primary research to drive market insight and recommendations
  • Undertake bespoke projects for clients
  • Work with PR and marketing to promote work through press releases, relations with the media, and social media


To succeed, you will need:


  • Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in the ICT industry, either working for a public utility, vendor, consultancy or within an analyst house. A deep understanding of the trends, technologies, policies, and business strategies shaping the utilities technology market, with a special focus on future grid requirements and smart cities, would be a particular benefit.
  • Excellent writing skills: You must write well. You will be comfortable writing both short, highly opinionated pieces, and longer, more discursive analyses. You will structure complex threads of argument and explain implications and opportunities in simple terms.
  • Commercial acumen: Working closely with our local account directors, you will be expected to grow the client list for Enterprise / Public-Sector research and analysis.
  • Intellectual excellence: Successful candidates will have a strong track record of academic, commercial or otherwise influential achievement in their chosen domain. At a minimum, you will be educated to bachelor’s degree level and ideally will have completed post-graduate studies.
  • Numeracy: You will be helping the team build and maintain market models and forecasts covering enterprise services. Ideally, you will have extensive experience in building models based on primary research data and market demographics. Strong Excel skills are essential.
  • Strong team working skills: Candidates will be part of a team of analysts with joint responsibility for developing our research. You will frequently lead or work as part of a team on both analysis and consulting projects.
  • Communication and presentation skills: You will need to demonstrate the ability to represent Ovum externally, to clients, prospects, and the wider marketplace via enquiry responses, conference calls, conference presentations, and client visits.
