Job Description

Ovum’s Principal Analyst, China will be an acknowledged expert in China’s telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) industries. They will have a proven track record of developing market-leading research on the Chinese TMT market and proactively working with sales to develop commercial opportunities including syndicated and custom research. 

The Principal Analyst, China will have excellent skills in both Chinese and English, including strong English speaking and writing skills. The position is based in Beijing or Shanghai.

The Principal Analyst, China will have the skills and qualifications detailed below, with their area of expertise being China’s TMT industry.

Principal Analyst role

A Principal Analyst is a go-to expert in their field, who is widely recognised in his or her topic. A Principal Analyst applies advanced research methods, including but not limited to business modelling and forecasting, primary research (through their own network of industry executives) and desk research.

Their standard of research is excellent, meaning that the research contributes unique insight in their field which clients actively seek out. The analyst has developed propitiatory methodologies which are usually tied into products that make a demonstrable commercial contribution. In short, the Principal Analyst is considered to be one of the leading analysts in their research pillar.

A Principal Analyst regularly interacts with clients and as a result responds to client enquiry, sales and marketing support request. The analyst is also considered a mentor by more junior grades, regularly helping others improve their research and providing career development support. As such, the analyst will lead major research programmes but is also expected to be a second author to research produced by Senior Analysts and junior analysts.  

Principal Analysts are active in the commercial process, pro-actively seeking out sales leads and has a proven track record of working with sales in bringing in large single copy, consulting and subscription deals in excess of $80,000.

A Principal Analyst sees consulting as a natural extension of their role and is adept at generating consulting leads and provides excellent sales support to the commercial teams. The analyst is adept at proposal and consulting scoping and is able to demonstrate an aptitude to control scope creep throughout a live project.

Major responsibilities

  • A thought leader in their own topic. The research includes all of Ovum formats and must include forecasts and dedicated programme of research that the analyst is responsible for.
  • Lead consulting projects, scoping projects in the sales process and controlling deliverables during deliverables.
  • Deliver on time and to budget. Managing deliverables to budget and agreed timescales.
  • Product/research development: Generate commercial sound new products and research programmes. The Principal Analyst should support their Practice Leader by recommending new opportunities for the team. The Practice Leader regular seeks out the advice of a Principal Analyst.
  • Closely engage with clients to drive demonstrable subscription and consulting revenues.
  • Support sales and new business by joining meetings for major account renewals. Participate in the client partner program. Support new business opportunities for major accounts and growth accounts as identified by the leadership team.
Required Experience
  • Extensive experience - 10+ years in industry, analysis and/or consulting
  • Commercial acumen – regularly wins mid to large business on own initiative
  • Product creation – creates new products/offers and successfully brings these to market
  • Resourceful - Experience harnessing resources across a number of corporate units to boost commercial position
  • Proven track record of producing first-rate research
  • Mentor for more junior team members
