Optical Components Principal Analyst | Ovum TMT Intelligence  – US Remote

The Optical Components Principal Analyst reports to the Practice Leader, Components Transport and Routing and is responsible for providing thought leadership on the Optical Components market. The OC PA will drive production and publication of authoritative, opinionated, strategic and numerate analyses.







  • Take the lead in producing thought leading research on the Optical Components sector, with an emphasis on the opportunities and imperatives for components companies around data centers, 5G, and IoT.
  • Drive the quality and depth of our research and data by collaborating within our analyst team to produce unique and high-impact insights to our clients.
  • Be proactive in deepening our existing client relationships, and working with our commercial teams to develop new opportunities.
  • Increase the visibility and influence of Ovum’s Optical Components team in the major Internet Content Providers, Communications Service Providers, System Vendors, Components Vendors and the Wall Street financial community.
  • Position his or herself as a thought leader in the Optical Components sector through the production of authoritative, opinionated, and original analysis
  • Conduct telephone and face-to-face interviews with industry sources, both agencies and vendors, and other forms of primary research, with publicly-available sources as a last resort
  • Use and analyze primary research to drive market insight and recommendations
  • Support client enquiries by responding to clients through written, telephone, or in-person communications
  • Undertake bespoke projects for clients
  • Work with PR and marketing to promote his or her work through press releases, relations with the media, and social media







  • Excellent writing skills: You must write well. You will be comfortable writing both short, highly opinionated pieces, and longer, more discursive analyses. You will structure complex threads of argument and explain implications and opportunities in simple terms.
  • Commercial acumen: Working closely with our local account directors, you will be expected to grow the client list for Optical Components research and analysis.
  • Intellectual excellence: Successful candidates will have a strong track record of academic, commercial or otherwise influential achievement in their chosen domain. At a minimum, you will be educated to bachelor’s degree level and ideally will have completed post-graduate studies.
  • Numeracy: You will be helping the team build and maintain market share models and forecasts covering Optical Components. Ideally, you will have extensive experience in building models based on primary research data and market demographics. Strong Excel skills are essential.
  • Strong team working skills: Candidates will be part of a team of analysts with joint responsibility for developing our research. You will frequently lead or work as part of a team on both analysis and consulting projects.
  • Communication and presentation skills: You will need to demonstrate the ability to represent Ovum externally, to clients, prospects, and the wider marketplace via enquiry responses, conference calls, conference presentations, and client visits.






  • Candidates should have substantial experience in the Optical Components, Communications Semi-Conductor industry, either working for an ICP, CSP, systems, components or IC vendor, consultancy or within an analyst house.
  • A deep understanding of the trends, technologies, policies, and business strategies shaping the Optical Components technology market, with a special focus on Silicon Photonics and Photonic Integration, would be a particular benefit.
