The Albert S. Cook Library seeks an early-career librarian from an underrepresented group for a three year residency program to begin Summer 2019. The Towson University Library Residency program is designed to provide a broad range of experiences in academic librarianship, a supportive environment for professional exploration, and a capstone project in an area of specialization. The purpose of the program is to help increase the presence of members of underrepresented groups in academic librarianship and to bring fresh ideas and new perspectives to the library.
In the first two years, the Resident will gain meaningful work experience in departments throughout the library, and in the final year will complete a capstone project.


MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution, preferably granted between December 2017 and June 2019. Commitment to developing a career in academic librarianship; knowledge of issues and developments in academic libraries; demonstrated interest or experience in diversity and inclusion initiatives; strong commitment to supporting the academic and research needs of students, faculty and staff; basic familiarity with current practices and technology in library instruction, technical services, and special collections.; proficiency in the use of electronic databases, research and reference materials; experience with automated library systems; demonstrated interest in scholarship and commitment to professional growth; strong, positive interpersonal and collaborative skills; ability to work in a team environment; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and collaboratively on a variety of projects simultaneously; demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, time management and project management skills; ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast paced environment with a diverse population. In the first two years of this three year residency, the Resident will have significant responsibilities and gain meaningful work experience within the following library departments:


  • Research, Reference, and Instructional Services
  • Content Management – Collection Development, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Serials
  • Special Collections & University Archives
  • Library Information Technology
  • Access Services
  • Library Advancement and Assessment

The Resident will also be involved in library and university committees, develop collegial relationships with faculty outside the library, and participate in professional organizations.

In the third year, the Resident will specialize in their chosen area(s) and work with the Residency Coordinator and department heads to identify a capstone project that is tailored to their professional interests and to the needs of the library. A goal of this project is for the Resident, working independently or with colleagues, to develop, complete, and report research or creative work at a professional conference or in a professional journal.
