The Search team is responsible for the worldwide customer facing search features on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.  This entails everything from the moment a customer clicks into the search box or browse category to when they view product results on Target.com and mobile.  We design, develop, and deploy high performance, fault-tolerant distributed search systems used by millions of Target Guests every day across the digital landscape.  We use data mining, usability, and A/B experiments to develop customer-focused search, browse, and dynamic landing pages and technologies across a wide variety of categories, from grocery to apparel and electronics.


The Search team is looking for a Technical Lead Product Owner to lead a global effort to make it even easier for all customers to find the products they’re looking for on our digital platforms (web, mobile, tablet).  In this role you’ll focus on improving the search and discovery experience for Target, around ranking of product results based on relevancy, diversity, desirability and business logics. The Lead Product Owner for Search sets the overall strategic vision for improving the guest search experience scientifically through data. In this highly visible position, you’ll be part of the Digital Product Management organization which works closely with software engineering, data scientists and UX product design teams across Target to shape the future of our search experiences



  • Create a vision and lead the team in connecting the dots between the science of machine learning and the art of creating truly personal user experiences that amaze our guests
  • Lead and coordinate efforts cross-functionally with business teams, software development engineers, operations, other product managers, UX designers, and external partners to guarantee a smooth and efficient product delivery
  • Serve as the “Voice of the Guest” to all outside stakeholders to ensure that their needs are met and that the product team is getting any support it needs
  • Oversee progress against backlog to ensure work and priorities are in line with product strategy and goals
  • Make final decisions on any scope changes to prioritize key features


  • 7 years of experience, including 4 in a product strategy role or requirements development role across mobile, tablet, and web platforms
  • Solid understanding of fundamental search concepts such as indexing, ranking, relevancy, etc.
  • Intense data orientation and a familiarity with machine learning / search approaches and best practices
  • Understand modern best practices of agile development - can articulate use cases, user stories, and have the ability to clearly communicate priorities
  • Proven track record of taking end-to-end ownership and driving results; demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects - work prioritization, planning, task delegation and coordination across teams
  • Ability to establish rapport, credibility, and influence in a highly cross-functional, matrixed organization
  • Demonstrates the ability to successfully influence multiple stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams
  • Excellent UX intuition; demonstrated success in creating innovative and user-friendly products and customer-facing features with strong bias for action
  • Superior analytical and quantitative skills; experience using data and metrics to test theories, confirm assumptions, and measure success
  • Familiarity with test and learn approaches but recognize that building great product requires the ability to balance numbers with intuition and vision for the long-term guest experience
