FACULTY POSITIONS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

 

Positions Available: The Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) was founded with a historic $30 million gift in 2016, and is currently seeking outstanding Assistant Professor and Associate/Full Professor candidates to start in Fall 2019. Commensurate with experience, Stephenson Chair endowments are available at the Associate/Full level and an endowed Stephenson Professorship may be available at the Assistant Professor level for highly qualified candidates. Significant value is placed on translational research and on research areas synergistic with the existing strengths in SBME. We are seeking applications with emphasis in the areas of:

  1. Cancer, at the Associate/Full Professor level (1 position, OU-Norman campus)
  2. Neuroimaging, with human brain focus, at the Assistant Professor level (1 position at OU-Tulsa campus)

The cancer position hire will be a member of the Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC), which achieved NCI designation in May 2018. This designation is reserved for programs that show the highest level of team-based research activities. The Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering and Stephenson Cancer Center are engaged in joint recruitment for this position.

 

Candidate Qualifications: Successful candidates will be visionary and collegial, with an outstanding record of scholarship, research, and commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. A doctoral degree is required in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. Candidates for the Associate/Full Professor position should bring an established vibrant research program with a track record of external funding, with additional weight given to NIH sponsorship. Candidates for the Assistant Professor position are expected to have the potential to develop a strong record of external grant funding.

 

Department and Region: Technical areas of strength in SBME include imaging, nanomedicine, neural engineering, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine, with application areas including cancer diagnosis and treatment, brain injury and disorders, musculoskeletal medicine and pediatric healthcare, which are facilitated by extensive collaborations with scientists and clinicians at the OU Health Sciences Center (OUHSC), the OU Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (IBEST), the Oklahoma Center for Neuroscience (OCNS), and the Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) in Tulsa. Lab space is available for all positions, and the brand new Gallogl­­­y Hall building (vivarium in basement) opening in Fall 2019 at the OU-Norman campus. Stephenson Graduate Fellowships are available for recruiting top Ph.D. students. There is fertile ground for regional funding and bioscience industry connections via organizations such as Innovation to Enterprise (i2E), Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science & Technology (OCAST), Oklahoma Bioscience Association (OKBio), the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), and the Oklahoma Center for Adult Stem Cell Research (OCASCR).

 

OU SBME is committed to undergraduate and graduate education, with B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Engineering. OU SBME currently has 10 faculty, ~240 undergraduates, and ~25 graduate students, with the expectation of expanding to 13+ faculty in the near term on a strong sustained growth trajectory, and significant expansion beyond.
