Summary:

The Coordinator of Substance Abuse Counseling shall be responsible for the direction, provision and quality of substance abuse counseling services. The position demands maintaining a high level of performance by providing guidance, direction, training, assessment, and feedback for all clinical staff to address the needs of the population we serve. The position requires working independently and under minimal supervision with strong communication skills to address progress and or concerns with the Acting Director, Administrator, CEO, and committees.

Essential Duties:
  • Assures compliance of the clinical program with CARF and all state, federal, local, and governing body policies. Assists in all surveys and inspections.
  • Serves on the Executive Committee of the Professional staff and/or Utilization Review Committee.
  • Evaluates the clinical needs of the institution and develops appropriate training to address identified needs.
  • Supervises and facilitates clinical privileging for clinical staff members.
  • Prepares the monthly clinical and employee schedule assigning treatment responsibilities, seminar presentations, and other monthly events.
  • Assigns cases to monitoring counselors and ensures proper distribution of caseloads.
  • Supervises case management and facilitates a daily staff meeting and case review conference.
  • Insures timely and complete documentation of treatment services through regular review of records.
  • Presents material in seminars, individual and group counseling when necessary, as well as the supervising the education aspects of the clinical program.
  • Evaluates all applicants for the clinical positions, schedules, and interviews for desirable applicants, and makes recommendations to the Executive/Clinical Director for employment of new clinical staff members.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Executive Director/Clinical Director.
  • Assists professional staff in resolving program and treatment difficulties as may be encountered, supervises assigned personnel providing group and individual counseling/therapy. Assists in planning individual treatment program and activities. Assures continuing staff effectiveness for assigned area of responsibility, provides for counseling and guidance to individual staff; monitors family treatment program.
  • Carries a caseload, or to provide additional billing/outpatient services to amount to 1/1/2 times agreed upon monthly salary.
  • Conducts appropriate screening for admissions, orientations and discharges. Assists in facilitating admits, bed availability, certification for insurance benefits, discharges and continuing care programming provides for clinical quality control on a case-by-case basis for the area of responsibility.
  • Provides for continuing professional development of assigned staff; reviews individual development goals, progress, evaluation, certification progress, and results.
  • Assist the Executive Director/Clinical Director, when necessary in the monitoring of program services. Monitor all clinical program areas on a regular basis to evaluate performance, assist with issues/concerns and interact with residents.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all resident care information to assure resident rights are protected.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with the medical profession, referral sources, EAPs and other health related facilities and organizations through formal working and transfer agreements. Network and marketing to promote the program and maintain a positive community relationship.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited educational institution in an appropriate behavioral science, mental health discipline or recognized helping professional
  • Professional experience in a recognized professional alcoholism treatment program. This experience must include group and individual counseling treatment planning, and case management.
  • One-year experience in a recognized professional alcohol program. Professional alcoholism program may be substituted for 1 year of academic training beyond high school, provided that the experience is related to the job requirements.
  • Philosophy of treatment that is compatible with facility philosophy.
  • Certification by the state and/or NCC as Drug and Alcohol Counselor.
